Text Box: What’s the Problem with Wind Turbines at Burton Joyce ?

Please take the time to read this item and then please look up and research the issues for yourself to help make up your own mind

Background Information

Burton Joyce Parish Council along with many of its residents is concerned over the recent problems  with climate change and environmental awareness. Within the last month we have instigated a refit in one of our parks to have an ecological and conservation area for the village instead of flat areas of grassland. We also visited the new Biomass Construction site at Severn Trent Water next to Burton Joyce (the first Plant in the UK) that takes the residue sludge from the sewage works and adds them to maize grown in all the fields around Burton Joyce. The fermented brew provides gas used to power generators producing  electricity sold to the grid.

The BJPC is delighted with this technology and despite the landscape changing ( we have lost the dairy herds) at BJ, we  think this is an excellent case of constructive renewable resourcing .

When STWA informed us via a scoping report that there were intending to put Wind Turbines at Burton Joyce after a monitoring mast, we waited until and idea of the plan was developed. We did expect it like the biomass to be a good move for the village and the environment and were ready to support it.

However it soon became clear that whilst the principle was good, the devil was in the detail. Whilst the full planning is yet to be confirmed STWA indicated they would be putting 3 no Very Large Wind Turbines  at 125 or 132metres (410– 433ft high) in the fields next to Burton Joyce on the A612. At 132m these would be the tallest wind turbines in the UK that we have found onshore. At 450metres away from the man road and 300 houses they were also the closest to a densely packed residential area that we could find.

The BJPC became concerned on the impact this would have on our residents and took a difficult decision to investigate the viability of the scheme by comparing it to about 50 other similar schemes throughout the country.

The following information is the result of significant research and activity and was presented to the residents of Burton Joyce in the public meeting on Nov 19th in the Village Hall at Burton Joyce. Our aim was to start a debate and hopefully to encourage the  questioning of schemes that are very close to populations and whether the benefits outweigh the cost to the  residents.
